FOVEON X3 (R) Direct Image Sensor |
The first digital SLR camera for SIGMA, SD9, has a progressive image sensor, which conventional digital camera has not had ever and co-developed by SIGMA and an American venture company FOVEON Inc.. Many professionals say this image sensor is one of the ideal image sensors so far, and the results taken by a demonstration camera were satisfactory for me as well. SD9 has given me an impression as a unique digital SLR camera through my one-year- experience at work. I believe images become well satisfactory by making full use of SD9 even shooting with thoroughly stance is necessary for SD9. In addition, various exclusive interchangeable lenses make me enjoy digital SLR camera itself.
Delicate image by SD9 gives me a feeling both high technology and handcraft.
Actually, high image quality of digital camera is measured only by pixel count and moreover pixel count was used to be a standard characteristic indication, which is nonsense. Even today, some instruction articles mention only about 3.43 million effective pixels, but the greatest feature of FOVEON sensor is three silicon-embedded layers of pixel sensors and it is difficult to compare it to other sensors by only the number of pixels.
More improved version, SD10, was launched on November 14, 2003. SD10 succeeds to increase more sensitivity and an exposure by adding micro lens to upon image sensor. Further more, users opinions are used everywhere for the improvement. Without using CR123 batteries, the shape of grip becomes more comfortable to fit to hands. Rather large camera body design with straight line feels me rough, but I hope this design is going to be better in time.

RAW format recording
|
 |
In order to maximize image quality both the SD9 and SD10 SLRs capture pure data in a RAW format. Despite many requests to include Jpeg format recording in-camera, Sigma have resisted this as they are not prepared to sacrifice the ultimate picture quality for convenience. Though Jpeg format recording is used by many of their competitors. Sigma is not prepared to compromise when it comes to using loss less compression for data files.
Sigma has developed the exclusive Sigma Photo Pro 2.0 software for reading and covering the RAW files. I have used many different types of image processing software and rate the SPP 2.0 as the best for its ease of operation and high quality features. The X3 Fill Light feature can be used to salvage badly over or under exposed sections of an image without burning out other areas. The Sigma Photo Pro 2.0 software is a vital part of the SD system, and one which attracted me in my search for the best available digital camera.

SIGMA LENS LINE-UP |
 |
Sigmas SD system is supported by a comprehensive range of interchangeable lenses, which gives me the potential to expand my system with confidence. Sigma, by manufacturing lenses for the various major camera companies, is in a unique position to accumulate and evaluate the different technologies. Sigma has developed a reputation for producing high quality lenses for both film and digital SLRs at affordable prices. Their latest project has been to develop two DC lenses (18-50mm and 55-200mm) designed for exclusive use with digital SLRs with APS-C size sensors. These small and lightweight lenses are exceptional optical quality and complement the SD system perfectly.

Sample images |
Please click the"X3F" or "JPEG"
button to download the sample images. All sample X3F (Raw data)
images are taken by SIGMA SD10 and converted to JPEG format by
Photo Pro software.
JPEG sample pictures are processed in "Default" mode (X3F mode) and saved in sRGB
color space.
It is necessary to download SIGMA Photo Pro Software from Download
and then install to your computer in order to review and process X3F images. |
